On June 12, the groundbreaking ceremony for China's first comprehensive hydrogen energy port took place in Qingdao. Shandong Port Group announced its ambitious plan to develop a world-class marine port cluster, with the creation of a full-scale hydrogen energy port as a critical initiative. This project aims to enhance hydrogen energy applications, build zero-carbon terminals, and support national strategies.
Key Initiatives:
Demonstration Port Creation: Accelerating the "full-scale" layout, exploring cutting-edge technologies, and continuously optimizing the energy structure to achieve comprehensive hydrogen energy applications. The goal is to establish a leading domestic and world-class demonstration base.
Industrial Chain Integration: Focusing on a "first-class supply chain service system" based on the port, concentrating efforts, resources, and elements to promote upstream and downstream industrial linkage, and advance full-chain collaborative innovation. This will help build a modern hydrogen energy industrial chain.
Ecosystem Development: Adhering to the principle of "mutual benefit and win-win," leveraging port advantages, building cooperative platforms, and promoting shared growth. This will expand the hydrogen energy industry’s network and shared ecosystem.
Specific Measures:
Hydrogen Supply System: Constructing an integrated hydrogen supply system at Qingdao Port, including efficient hydrogenation and safe hydrogen use control systems.
Application Demonstrations: Creating integrated application demonstrations across the entire port hydrogen energy industry chain, multi-scenario applications, and diversified application demonstrations.
Platform Construction: Establishing a hydrogen energy R&D and innovation platform, a hydrogen energy trade hub platform, and a hydrogen port public service platform.
In recent years, Shandong Port Group has driven energy transformation at ports, integrating hydrogen energy and green development. It was the first to release the "14th Five-Year Plan" for green and low-carbon ports in the maritime sector, incorporating hydrogen energy as a key element of comprehensive energy applications at ports. Since 2019, Qingdao Port has led hydrogen energy initiatives with hydrogen-powered container trucks and automated rail cranes. In 2021, they undertook the "Hydrogen into Ten Thousand Homes" project, researching key hydrogen port technologies and demonstrations. By 2022, Qingdao Port built the first fully qualified port hydrogen refueling station in China and introduced hydrogen-powered container trucks for large-scale demonstrations, laying a solid foundation for the construction of a comprehensive hydrogen energy port.
