Tianjin benefits from hosting Summer Davos xinde marine news 2018-01-26 16:10

North China's Tianjin Municipality, the host of the 2018 World Economic Forum (WEF) "Annual Meeting of the New Champions", also known as Summer Davos, has benefited a great deal from hosting the event.

More than 150 million containers were shipped in or out from the port of Tianjin last year. The Summer Davos has not only boosted the city's economy by bringing in more trade but has also provided an international vibe to local companies.

The Tianjin Port Group, the main operator of northern China's largest port, was admitted to the World Economic Forum's Community of Global Growth Companies in 2007, becoming an active participant in both WEF forums, which has not only helped drive its growth but also form the basis of its future.

"Through those forums, we are able to timely take the pulse of global economy, the shipping sector and trade. It's very helpful in guiding us in planning the layout of the port and extension of its functions, and in promoting our businesses. Our port has, therefore, been upgraded continuously," said Chen Tao, director of the General Office of the Tianjin Port Group.

In 2007, the World Economic Forum established the Annual Meeting of the New Champions. The meeting is held alternatively in two Chinese cities of Dalian and Tianjin, a platform that helps stimulate international interest in the host cities.

"Every time I go back to Dalian or Tianjin, it takes me a day or two to orient myself with all the changes and construction and development. But also what's been great is to see some of the local companies who started out as, maybe, little giants or small- and medium-sized enterprises, really become globally significant. You know, companies like new soft out of Dalian or other companies. You know it's been great to see those companies benefit from their globalization and their international activities," said David Aikman, chief representative officer of World Economic Forum (Greater China).

Tewoo is among the local companies that have enhanced their international profiles over the years. With the help of the forum, the fortune 500 company has now become a more globalized, innovative and cooperative business.

"(Through the platform of Davos), we have built ties with many fortune 500 enterprises including Louis Dreyfus. We have established good cooperation relationship both domestically and internationally in terms of materials gathering," said Gao Yuke, deputy general manager of the Tewoo Group.
