China 2017 Thermal Coal Imports Rise 8.08 pct



China imported 105.54 million tonnes of thermal coal (including bituminous and sub-bituminous coal) in 2017, rising 8.08% year on year, showed the latest data released by the General Administration of Customs on January 23.
 

The value of the imports totaled $1.77 billion, dropping 66.73% year on year.
 
In December, the country imported 9.08 million tonnes of thermal coal, down 15.3% from the year-ago level but up 11.41% from the previous month.
 
Imports value stood at $775.52 million in December, translating to an average import price of $85.41/t, rising $10.68/t from a year ago.
 
Meanwhile, China imported 82.60 million tonnes of lignite last year, increasing 14.44% year on year, with the value surging 53.61% from the preceding year to $4.06 billion.
 
Lignite imports in December reached 6.72 million tonnes, down 11.35% year on year and 14.07% from November, with value at $352.13 million, edging down 0.02% year on year.
 
Separately, the country exported 289,000 tonnes of thermal coal in December, with value at $27.33 million. Thermal coal exports during 2017 stood at 3.56 million tonnes, with value at $294.24 million.
