World's largest liquefied gas carrier delivered in Shanghai!

The world's biggest ultra-large liquefied gas carrier, with a capacity of carrying 93,000 cubic meters of liquefied gas, was delivered to Singapore company Petredec in east China's Shanghai on Wednesday.

With a total length of 230 meters and a width of 36.6 meters, the vessel, named Harzand, is independently developed, designed and built by Chinese manufacturer Jiangnan Shipyard and has a service speed of 16.5 knots.

Driven by liquefied natural gas and traditional fuel oil, the ship sees a fuel endurance of 23,000 nautical miles. Its fuel and gas consumption meets the latest emission requirements of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Domestically produced steels for low temperature service were used on the vessel, which has significantly reduced the procurement process.

"To build this vessel, we have actually used over 10,000 tons of steels for low temperature service, which constitute for nearly a third of the whole ship. For us, using such steel has many benefits. On the one hand, it reduces the construction cost, and on the other hand, it provides convenience for us to buy materials as the steel is domestically produced. Apart from that, the development of such materials for low temperature service will also offer broad prospects for us to make polar ships and others used in extreme low-temperature environment," said Hu Keyi, director of the Science and Technology Committee of Jiangnan Shipyard under the China State Shipbuilding Co., Ltd.

In efforts to make sure the ship can be immediately put into operation after delivery, the construction team has finished the conventional sea trial, gas-powered sea trial and gas test in one time.

"If we take the three trial tests separately, each test generally will take seven or eight days. This time, we have combined the three tests together and the whole process only took nine days, which has saved about a week," said Wei Xiaoyong, chief builder of the carrier.

Since 2012, Jiangnan Shipyard has received orders for 52 large liquefied gas carriers, including 14 orders for the 93,000 cubic meter type. At present, Jiangnan Shipyard has a global market share of nearly 25 percent in the field of large liquefied gas carriers.
