Panama's President Juan Carlos Varela Visits COSCO SHIPPING Group

On November 21, President Juan Carlos Varela of the Republic of Panama, who is on a state visit to China, paid a visit to COSCO SHIPPING headquarters in Shanghai and hold talks with Xu Lirong, chairman of COSCO SHIPPING. Both parties reviewed the business development of COSCO SHIPPING in Panama and exchanged views on possible mutually beneficial cooperation in the implementation of "Maritime Agreement of China and Panama" and the Panama Canal passes.

During the visit, President Varela signed 19 agreements with President Xi Jinping, including the "Maritime Agreement of China and Panama" related to maritime affairs. The visit is also Panama president’s first visit to China since the establishment of diplomatic relations on June this year. In particular, it included a visit to COSCO SHIPPING.

During the talks, Xu Lirong said that the expansion of the Panama Canal is of great significance to the healthy development of global trade. After the opening of the new canal gate, the development of global trade has been effectively promoted. In particular, the interconnection between Asia and the east coast of the United States has been enhanced. The "Maritime Agreement of China and Panama" will surely comprehensively expand the deep cooperation between the two sides in the fields of maritime transport, maritime affairs, ports and other transport infrastructures.

Xu Lirong said COSCO Shipping Group has maintained close cooperation with Panama. COSCO SHIPPING (Central America) Co., Ltd. has been established in Panama. In the future, COSCO SHIPPING will use the Panama Canal as a group transit hub in Central America and the Caribbean to lay out a route network and establish a stable and reliable global logistics supply chain.

President Varela said COSCO Shipping Group has played an important role in promoting bilateral economic and trade exchanges between China and Panama. In the future, the Panamanian government will actively promote visa facilitation and infrastructure construction so as to further ensure the effective utilization of the Panama Canal and the consolidation of its logistics center. Together with COSCO SHIPPING, Panama will further develop Panama into a cargo hub of Central America and the Caribbean.
