SunRui obtains first IMO G8 approval for active substance

Chinese ballast water management system (BWMS) maker SunRui Marine Environment Engineering Co has been granted a type-approval certificate in line with IMO’s revised G8 code for its BalClor unit, which uses filtration and indirect electrolysis to treat the water. It therefore also had to meet the G9 guidelines, which apply to systems that use active substances.

Its certificate was issued by class society DNV GL, acting on behalf of the Norwegian Maritime Authority, on 6 April. In a statement today (10 April) SunRui said the certificate marks “another significant milestone for SunRui Company after it was the fourth globally and the first in Asia to be awarded United States Coast Guard type approval certification.” Testing was carried out by DHI in Denmark and TUV SUD in Singapore.

Its statement notes that the revised IMO G8 code* contains more rigorous requirements on BWMS compliance than previously and comments that SunRui used “strategic foresight to predict market trends” and thus “prioritised the initiative to meet the revised IMO G8 approval standards.”
