Newly designed ships help expedite traffic in Yangtze River

The Yangtze River runs through some of China's most economically developed regions, but reaching the ocean from some of those areas has always been something difficult. Now a newly designed ship used specifically for ferry between ports along Yangtze River and the ocean makes shipping and transportation easier.

Along the coast of China's Zhejiang province, ports are docked with bulk cargo ships, carrying raw materials. The largest dock can accommodate a 400,000-DWT vessel. Ships from across the world unload millions of tons of iron ore on this port each year.

From this port, the iron ore and other goods are loaded onto smaller ships, then shipped to cities upstream along the Yangtze River. Even to the present, this process needs to be done multiple times, as most ocean-going cargo ships are too large to navigate the river. To solve this problem, designers have just rolled out a modern, new ship -- one that can go directly from the ocean to ports upstream.

"It is a ship specifically customized and designed for the particular water transportation environment and route along the Yangtze River. It is of a customized ship type with its own standards," said Lyu Bing, Project Manager of Zhejiang Seahead Ship Design and Research Institute.

River sailing standards are now in place for the new ships. The first one was delivered in 2017. And two more ship designs are now in progress.

By 2017, Zhoushan had handled over a billion tons of cargo, and nearly one fourth of them were shipped to cities along the Yangtze River. Experts say that the proportion will rise with the elapse of time.

"We have cargo ships coming from over 180 ports worldwide. So, with the ships, we can dock with the Yangtze River while fully taking the advantage of the geographical location of Zhoushan," said Xu Quanchang, Director of Zhoushan Navigation Affairs Bureau.

The container ships are now in development, and in the future ships will be able to go directly from Zhoushan to ports in the upper and middle reaches of the Yangtze River.
