Summary of MSC 107


The 107th session of the IMO’s Maritime Safety Committee (MSC 107) adopted new requirements for lifting appliances, anchor handling winches and ventilation of totally enclosed lifeboats, as well as approving interim guidelines on LPG as a marine fuel and shore power.
 
In their ‘technical regulatory news’ bulletin, which can be read here, DNV provide a summary of the new mandatory requirements and interim guidelines as agreed at MSC 107.

DNV also helpfully provide a high-level overview of what was adopted or approved at meeting which took place in London between 31 May and 9 June 2023:
 
·Adoption of new mandatory requirements for onboard lifting appliances and anchor handling winches
·Adoption of SOLAS amendments to prohibit the use of perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) in firefighting foams
·Adoption of SOLAS amendments to mandate electronic inclinometers for containerships and bulk carriers
·Adoption of mandatory navigation and voyage planning requirements for non-SOLAS ships operating in polar waters
·Adoption of new mandatory requirements for ventilation of totally enclosed lifeboats
·Adoption of STCW amendments to accommodate the use of electronic certificates and documents for seafarers
·Approval of a new Code of Safety for Diving Systems, 2023
·Approval of interim guidelines for the safety of ships using LPG fuels
·Approval of interim guidelines for the safe operation of onshore power supply
·Approval of draft amendments to extend the SOLAS requirements for emergency towing devices to all new ships over 20,000 GT
·Approval of draft amendments SOLAS and related instruments to enhance the fire safety of ro-ro passenger ships
