South China port promotes steel exports to B&R countries

The Fangchenggang Port near the southwest end of China's mainland coastline has been serving as a vital base for the country's steel exports to countries participating in the Belt and Initiative, thanks to its advantageous location.

The China 19th Metallurgical Corporation built the Fangchenggang Port Equipment Structure Company there and made it the biggest steel structure export base around the Beibu Gulf.

Luo Guibo, director of transportation with the Fangchenggang Port Equipment Structure Company, has worked for over a decade to ensure the sound quality and packaging of the steel exports.

"We are now packing steel structures for the nickel ore mine project in Indonesia invested by China's Jinchuan Group. The steel structure exports generally need to go through land and sea transportation over a long time and distance with complicated loading and unloading procedures involved, so good packaging is crucial," he said.

After over 20 days of hard work, 1,800 tons of steel structures were all be well-packaged and is set to be shipped to Indonesia.

It is the sixth batch of steel structures this year transported by Luo and his colleagues to foreign countries. In February, they took part in the company's largest-scale steel structure export to Malaysia for the Malaysia-China Kuantan Industrial Park (MCKIP) Project.

Luo's wife Gao Yulin has worked for two years in Malaysia for the MCKIP project.

Living apart from her husband, Gao joked they are like the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl in the Chinese folk tale.

"After the steel structures produced in China are shipped to Malaysia, I'm in charge of quality check and acceptance," Gao said.

The MCKIP is a key project of cooperation between the Chinese and Malaysian governments. Its over 20,000 tons of steel structures all came from the Fangchenggang Port Equipment Structure Company. With these Chinese products, construction at the park has been greatly accelerated.

"These are the factory buildings built by China. We estimated that it would take Malaysians five years to finish the construction, but it only took the Chinese workers two years to complete a great site like this," said Chu Kok Chaun, a Malaysian worker for the MCKIP Project.

As of now, the Fangchenggang Port Equipment Structure Company has produced 180,000 tons of steel structures, receiving orders from eight ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) countries.
