Organised by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, the Bazaar by the Pier commemorates Singapore Bicentennial. It will be held from 9 to 10 November (10 am to 7 pm) at Marina South Pier. Themed ‘Past, Present and Future of Maritime Singapore’, Bazaar by the Pier is a free event open to visitors of all ages. It aims to promote public appreciation of Singapore’s maritime heritage, as well as the growth and transformation of Singapore’s maritime sector.
Visitors can discover the significance of the maritime sector in the everyday lives of Singaporeans, and reflect on the spirit of Maritime Singapore – versatility and resilience – that has enabled the industry to overcome past adversities and navigate the challenges of tomorrow. Besides guided tours of the Singapore Maritime Gallery, participants can register for an illustration class with Singaporean artist Lee Xinli, as well as a photography and social media content creation workshop. In addition, participants who have pre-registered for the Sea Tour Learning Journey will get to travel along the Singapore Strait to observe port operations while learning about the navigational aids and vessels in our waters. Young visitors can also look forward to craft activities and storytelling at the Singapore Maritime Gallery.
My Defining Maritime Moment
In addition, the Singapore Maritime Gallery features a new showcase of 20 winning entries from the ‘My Defining Maritime Moment’ social media photography contest. The exhibition will run from 9 November 2019 to 31 March 2020.
One of the winners, Mr Nicholas Hiew Voon Keat, posted a photograph capturing the grandeur of port cranes in an entry titled ‘Spotlight’. In his caption, Mr Hiew reflected that the landscape serves as “a good reminder that even as Singapore diversifies, maritime trade remains an important part of what drives us forward, and what defines us as a country.”
Mdm Tay Kim Suan, in her winning photograph of Tanjong Pagar Terminal, reminisced that the decommissioned terminal was “the icon of Singapore’s Port”, while she looked forward “to the future Mega Port [at] Tuas”.
During the 6-month long contest, 1,137 photographs depicting places of maritime heritage and the significant maritime memories of contest participants were posted on Facebook and Instagram.
The Guest-of-Honour, Mr Baey Yam Keng, Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Transport and Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, said, “Maritime trade has always been at the heart of Singapore’s economy. Following the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869, Singapore has played a vital role in trade between Europe and Asia, and became a key trading hub. We must possess the same forward-looking mindset our forefathers had and continue to innovate so as to remain relevant and competitive.”
