China's Q1 container exports up 4.9pc to 53.79 million TEU


China's container exports from its top 45 coastal ports grew 4.9 per cent in the first quarter year on year to 53.79 million TEU, according to the Ministry of Transport.
 
These ports handled 19.73 million TEU in January; 16.63 million in February and 21.53 million in March with the top five ports handling 33.38 million TEU or 60.3 per cent of total throughput.
 
The top 10 ports by volume account for 44.55 million TEU, which is about 80.4 per cent of the total. The remaining 35 ports account for 10.84 million TEU, 19.6 per cent of the total.
 
All top 10 ports experienced a decline in volumes in February compared to January, but posted a recovery in March. The decline was blamed on the impact of the Chinese New Year holiday.
 
Shanghai was the top port with a first quarter of 10.42 million TEU, 6.9 per cent up year on year. Shanghai handled 3.75 million in January, 2.86 million in February and 3.81 million in March.
 
Shanghai handled more boxes in the first three months of this year than the Port of Los Angeles handled in the whole of last year, noted New York's FreightWaves.
 
The ports at Ningbo-Zhoushan, adjacent to Shanghai, had a first quarter volume of 6.7 million TEU, up three per cent year on year. Ningbo-Zhoushan handled 2.6 million TEU in January; 1.95 million in February and 2.15 million in March.
 
Shenzhen handled 6.05 million TEU in the first quarter of 2019, 1.4 per cent more than in the first quarter of 2018. It handled 2.41 million TEU in January; 1.6 million in February and 2.05 million in March.
 
Guangzhou handled 5.28 million TEU in the first quarter, up 8.8 per cent year on year. Guangzhou lifted 1.9 million TEU in January; 1.4 million in February and 1.99 million in March.
 
Qingdao handled 4.94 million TEU in the first quarter. Qingdao handled 1.76 million TEU in January; 1.45 million TEU in February and 1.72 million in March.
