World Shipping Summit held in Shanghai

The 14th session of World Shipping Summit was held in Shanghai at the National Exhibition and Convention Center on Tuesday as a side-event of the first China International Import Expo (CIIE).

The event was hosted by one of China's largest shipping conglomerates, China Ocean Shipping Company (COSCO), and attracted over 800 participants from shipping, business, trade, port, logistics, finance, and other shipping related sectors.

Themed "new landscape of world trade, new challenge of logistics evolution", the participants discussed a wide range of issues including changes coming for world trade, the impacts of the trade tensions, and the global shipping business network.

"I believe technology starts first, and then manufacturing, and then jobs, trade flows and finally trade balance, not the other way around. There's no turning back. Technology is a perpetual. I have not seen a technology that is useful, unleashed upon the world, and later put into a can and tucked away," said Tan Chong Meng, the Group Chief Executive Officer at PSA International Pte Ltd.

Started in 2004, the summit is one of the most important high-level forums in the shipping industry, known as Davos of maritime affairs.
