First Wellness at Sea Week to be hosted in Hong Kong

A brand new global initiative from international maritime charity Sailors’ Society, Wellness at Sea Week, from 4 - 10 Nov, will highlight the issue of crew wellness

Following on from successful conferences in Singapore and London, Sailors’ Society is holding Wellness at Sea Week, with a range of events and activities focused on crew wellness taking place around the world – culminating in a seminar and trek in Hong Kong.

A brand new global initiative from international maritime charity Sailors’ Society, Wellness at Sea Week will include a number of activities focusing on the five modules of the charity’s award-winning Wellness at Sea programme – physical, emotional, social, intellectual and spiritual wellness.

Representatives from the international shipping community are lending their support to the week, including Wah Kwong Maritime Transport Holdings, Anglo-Eastern and Wallem.

Stuart Rivers, Sailors’ Society CEO, said, “Seafarer wellness is key to Sailors’ Society, and we’ve been working hard to encourage everyone working in maritime to focus on this important issue. We are fortunate to have great support from the shipping industry for our work, including our fantastic Hong Kong Ambassadors group, and know that the welfare of seafarers is taken seriously by many.

“However, there is still a way to go in spreading best practice, which is why Sailors’ Society will be holding its first Wellness at Sea Week in our 200th anniversary year.”

Events will kick off with Wellness at Sea seafarer coaching sessions in India and South Africa and CEO Stuart Rivers speaking on the Mental Health and Wellness ROI panel session at CrewConnect Global (7 Nov).

Sabrina Chao, Chair of Wah Kwong Maritime Transport Holdings, will be delivering the keynote speech at the Wellness at Sea Seminar in Hong Kong (9 Nov, tickets HK$500) where delegates will also able to hear the latest findings on well-being and occupational health from Prof. Rafael Lefkowitz, Yale University.

A free, live-streamed Wellness at Sea debate will follow the seminar, where industry leaders will discuss the issue of connectivity at sea and whether this benefits seafarer well-being. Speakers include Arthur Bowring, formerly of Hong Kong Shipowners Association, Pradeep Chawla of Anglo-Eastern and Fared Khan of Wallem.

The week will culminate in the Wellness at Sea Trek, which takes in Hong Kong’s scenic hiking trails and ends with a celebratory party at the Ladies’ Recreation Club. Trek participants can choose between a 25km and 10km family-friendly option and funds raised will go towards the charity’s Wellness at Sea Programme.

Stuart continued, “This is only the start for Wellness at Sea Week, and next year we’re planning something even bigger and better in a different shipping location. Employees from organisations around the world can also get involved and raise awareness throughout the week by posting a short video clip of staff taking on one of the specially designed quick workouts for seafarers on Sailors’ Society’s free Wellness at Sea app, using the hashtag #WellnessWeek.”
