CNOOC-chartered Esperanza to arrive at Tianjin gas supply

A Norwegian-built floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) chartered by China's CNOOC is due to arrive next week at northern China's Tianjin, ready to supply gas for the country's peak winter demand, said an executive with Hoegh LNG, the owner and builder of the facility on October 16.

Esperanza, which is able to handle 6 million tonnes of gas annually, could stay at Tianjin for six months or longer, due to strong Chinese imports of liquefied natural gas, said Sveinung Stohle, chief executive officer with Hoegh LNG at a China-Norway energy seminar.

CNOOC charters Esperanza from Hoegh LNG under a term deal that started in June and lasts for three years with a one year extension option.

Hoegh's CEO sees strong demand from major Chinese importers for FSRUs and said the company's next new vessel will be delivered in November.

China, the world's second-largest LNG buyer, is expected to import a record 54 million tonnes of the fuel this year versus 38 million tonnes last year, according to consultancy SIA Energy.
