China Merchants Shipping holds a conference on innovation


On May 10, 2019, China Merchants Shipping (CMS) held a special conference on digital innovation in New Era Plaza in Shekou. Mr Wang Yongxin, Executive Deputy Director of CMS, Mr Liu Weiwu, Mr Zhang Baoliang, Mr Lyu Shengzhou, Mr Yan Wushan, Mr Xu Hui, Mr Ding Lei, Deputy Directors; Mr Hu Bin, Assistant to President of CMES, and Mr Wu Jianyi, Chief Engineer of CMES attended the conference. Mr Wu Yi, Deputy Director of the CMG Digital Center, Mr Qu Baozhi, Vice President of CMG Innovation Science Research Institute, and experts from the Boston Consulting Group, etc. were invited to attend. Ms Ding Jun, Chief Digital Officer of CMES, presided over the meeting.
 
In his concluding remarks, Mr Wang Yongxin analyzed and proposed some requirements for the understanding, goals, methodologies, organization, mechanisms, and implementing tasks of the digital innovation work of CMS in terms of “Reason, Law, Techniques and Instrument”. Mr Wang emphasized that for the sake of digital transformation of CMS, it would first be important for the Group to be guided by the strategic principle of “Seize the day for a better future; be ahead with technology and an open mind”. By achieving these, the CMES can build a world-class shipping enterprise and achieve high-quality development. Secondly, the Group would have to improve the quality and efficiency of the enterprises with digital innovation, to be practical and effective, and to implement actions. Thirdly, the Group should have the courage to think outside the box and transform data into assets, services and ecology, thereby injecting vitality into innovation. Fourthly, the Group must focus on cultivating the five basic capabilities of digital innovation, namely organization, process, team, data and models. Fifthly, it would be important to plan comprehensively, emphasize advancements, review by phases, develop rapid iteration, and have an open mindset. By exerting efforts across all levels, the Group could effectively promote the work of digital innovation. Other leaders shared the digital innovation work from their respective businesses and discussed relevant measures and requirements.
 
At the conference, the CMES Technology and Innovation Research Institute and the Boston Consulting Group shared their thoughts on the topics of “Global Technology Innovation Hotspots and Their Impacts on Shipping Business” and “Trends of Digitalization in Shipping Industry”. Through thematic exchanges, the vision of the attendees was broadened, whereas the knowledge and understanding of digitization were further enhanced. By targeting on the objectives and ideas of digital innovation, the representatives of all subordinate units were eager to share their views based on the characteristics of the business format and the current situation of digital construction. At the conference, the understanding of all units and departments of the SPO of the digital innovation work has been unified, while the objectives and their responsibilities were also clarified.
 
Some of the company’s current tasks in digital project were sorted out at the conference and related work deployment was also conducted, which laid the foundation for the next phase regarding the development of digital innovation and digital shipping in CMS.
 
Among the attendees were also the heads of functional departments and the main leaders or digital work leaders of the subordinate units, amounting to more than 40 people.
